To The Interested Potential Student Athlete:

Thank You for taking the time to visit our website, and for taking an interest in our organization. The Duquesne Men's Rowing Team is a club sport here at Duquesne University. We are a primarily student run organization, oversaw by the coach of the Women's Rowing Team, coach Katie Kirsten, and currently coached by Mike Webster, former student and rower at Duquesne. The Men's Rowing Team is almost 20 years old, and has established itself as a very competitive organization that is both locally and nationally recognized.

Rowing at Duquesne

For those who haven't experienced it, in no sport does teamwork have a greater meaning and importance than in Rowing. In a boat, one person's talent means nothing if the rest of the oarsmen aren't in perfect form, timing, physical capacity, and mindset. Rowing at Duquesne builds strength, endurance, precision, character, and friendship. And of course, it's a whole lot of fun

The Rowing season is year round. Fall races are usually around 5 Kilometers. The more significant races are in the Spring, and are usually 2K Sprints. Over the last two years the teams has traveled to Florida over Spring break for some essential water practices, cardiovascular workouts, and to have a good time. Practice involves running, erging on rowing machines, and going out on the water at the Three Rivers Rowing Association boathouse (TRRA). During the school year we practice around 5 or 5:30 in the morning, like most crews do. You quickly learn that this isn't a big problem as long as good time management is practiced. Most of the team is involved in many organizations outside of the rowing club, and have plenty of time for their other activities and jobs. The overall GPA on the team has often been among the highest of athletic organizations on campus, and the team membership is comprised of students from just about all colleges and majors on campus. Most students who row at Duquesne have no previous rowing experience. This is not a problem at all, as some of the most competitive members of our organization have never rowed before. It doesn't matter what sport you did in high school or are in right now; If you are athletic, strong, committed, and competitive, then rowing may be for you. Anyone can become a great asset to this team through dedication, whether you're a rower or a coxswain. See if you know anyone in the ATHLETES section of our site. Feel free to get in touch with any of us if you have any questions.

Competition and Achievement

Rowing is an extremely competitive sport; Races are sometimes won by fractions of a second. We compete at races such as Dad Vails (largest collegiate regatta in the United States), Knect Cup, Head of The Charles, Governor's Cup, Head of The Cuhayoga, MACRAs, Murphy Cup, Occoquan, Stonehurst, and others. The Head of The Ohio is a major race held here in Pittsburgh that we participate in. We compete against schools from all over the country, and consistently place well in almost every event. You can see this on the RESULTS section of this website.
