FALL SEASON KICKOFF |
| |
The fall season is kicking off tomorrow with the start of Varsity
Practice. Recruitment efforts have continued to bring in a steady
stream of freshmen rowers as well as experienced transfer students.
The first race of the season will be next Saturday, September 16th:
The Head of the Cuyahoga in Cleveland, OH. Last year the Dukes missed
placing in the race by less than a second, and hope to close the gap
this year. There are two new additions to this years race schedule:
The prestigious Head of the Charles as well as the Head of the Schuylkill
in Boston and Philadelphia, respectively. |

This year's head of the Speakmon was an overall successful event
for the Dukes, particularly for the improving and very promising novice
members. The novice four A boat once again took first place, and the
B boat took 4th. The novice eight was also powerful, coming in second.
On the way to the start of the race the varsity boat experiance equipment
problems and missed the start time, therefore having to race without
any competition in sight; On top of this setback came a questionably
high time score that differed significantly from that of our coxswains.
In the end the varsity boat placed 5th out of 11. |

Marietta is known for the strength of its rowing program and the
unusually high percentage of its student body involved in the sport.
At the head of the Muskingum this year the varsity pair, open four,
and novice eight competed against Marietta, Ohio University, and Harmar
Rowing Club. The open varsity boat placed third as they tried to hold
off the much more heavyweight Marietta teams. The novice were sucessful
this weekend as their A boat took first in their race. |

The Dukes contended in the Head of The Ohio this weekened in
their hometown. The team was very competitive this weekend as they
contented on their home course in the Allegheny. Brian Disalle raced
in three events today, coming in first in the Men's College Singles
event. The Varsity Pair (Disalle and Andrew Thomas) came in third
behind Penn A.C.'s A and C boats, and in front of their B. The Men's
Varsity four, again stroked by Disalle, was very competitive in
their race, taking fourth place out of 22 once again behind Michigan
State and MIT, passing many local teams during the race. The Duke's
novice eight also placed well this weekend, coming in third out
of seven boats in their first race of the season. Complete results
can be found here.

The
Dukes competed at the Governor's Cup in Charleston, WV this weekend.
Due to rough current, high waves, and rainy weather only the Varsity
Men’s Four and the Novice Four were able to get their first
heat finished before all races where called off for the day. The
Varsity boat came in 2nd in their heat, while the Novice placed
3rd as they raced through rough waters. |

This
year the traditional CarDuPitt (CMU, Duquesne, University of Pittsburgh)
scrimmage became more like the CarDuState as the University of Pittsburgh
was unable to participate in the race, and Penn State was able to
join us. There was very strong current during this shortened, 1800
meter race. Duquesne’s Men’s Lightweight Four came in
first in their race, defeating Penn State by over 12 seconds. The
Varsity and Novice Fours placed 3rd in their races. |

Unfortunately
the scrimage at Mercyhurst in Erie, PA has been canceled due to
frozen water and so the Dukes look to make their first splash here
in Pittsburgh at the CarDuPitt this weekend. The competition looks
fierce, but the team has really come together and appears poised
to place well against some really great teams.

The Dukes returned from their second annual
spring training trip in Sop Choppey, Florida. The family of former
coach Matt Grove once again let the team stay at their cozy Florida
house, which conveniently had a river in their back yard for us
to practice on. We thank the Grove family for their generosity.
Over break the team was able to spend almost every day out on the
water. While in Sop Choppy the team was also able to visit the beach
at St. George ’s Island for an afternoon, as well as enjoy
a leisurely sightseeing/rowing experience in some bay while searching
for hippos and whatnot. The team returned from Sop Choppy ready
to take on the spring season. After a couple of days on the water
back here in the burgh, they were forced back off the water by high
water flow and low temperatures. Of course they won't let that slow
them down as they continue to prepare for the official start of
the season on April 16 at the Knecht Cup in New Jersey.

Duquesne
Men’s Rowing made the trip up to Rochester, NY this weekend
for the Brighton Burngotta hosted by Brighton High School. Special
thanks to Andrew Thomas, and alumnus of Brighton, and his family
for their great hospitality as they opened their home to us for
the weekend. There wasn’t a large collegiate turnout at this
event except for the Dukes. |
